Canva's AI image generator lets users turn text prompts into original images in seconds, without design experience. The feature is built into the Canva editor and is accessible on both web and mobile, enabling creators to generate visuals directly within their existing projects.

Two primary tools power image generation on Canva. Magic Media's Text to Image accepts a written description and a choice of art style — including Watercolor, Filmic, Neon, Color Pencil, and Retrowave — to produce four image variants per prompt. Users can also choose the aspect ratio before generating. Create an image, powered by Dream Lab, adds reference image support, allowing users to upload a photo and guide the output by matching its style, colors, or composition. Dream Lab also offers a Boost resolution option to upscale generated images to sharper, higher-resolution results.

Generated images can be refined through follow-up prompt instructions or by selecting from the four output options. All outputs are integrated directly into the Canva design workflow, so images can immediately be placed into presentations, social media posts, websites, or print materials without switching tools. Canva applies automated moderation of input prompts and output images to block inappropriate content, and users can report issues from within the app.

Free users can generate up to 50 images per month with Magic Media. Canva Pro subscribers receive 500 AI image generations per user per month. The feature is available across Canva Free, Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Education, and Canva Nonprofit plans.
