AI Dungeon is a text adventure game that uses artificial intelligence to generate unique, infinitely varied storylines in response to player inputs. Unlike traditional adventure games with predefined paths, players can perform any action they can express in language, and the AI acts as a dungeon master to determine how the world responds. The game offers multiple pre-configured settings including fantasy, mystery, apocalyptic, cyberpunk, and zombies, with genre-specific character options like class selection for fantasy adventures.

Players interact through four main input methods that guide the AI-generated narrative. Custom adventures can be created from scratch by describing settings in text format, which the AI then generates complete worlds from. These custom adventures can be published and shared with the community, building a library of player-created content. The game supports both single-player and multiplayer modes, with multiplayer allowing different players to control individual characters in turn-based sessions within the same game world.

The platform features powerful Plot Components including AI Instructions, Story Summary, Plot Essentials, and Author's Note that help guide coherent story generation. Story Cards trigger contextual information when specific keywords appear, improving narrative consistency. The Memory System tracks important details across extended adventures. Advanced Settings allow players to customize AI response generation through parameters like context length, temperature, and repetition penalty. Context lengths range from 2,000 to 32,000 tokens depending on membership tier, determining how much story history the AI processes.

AI Dungeon integrates multiple AI text models including Mistral Large, Hermes, WizardLM, and others, with different models available at various membership tiers. The platform also supports AI image generation during gameplay using Stable Diffusion and DALL-E models to create unique visual content. Adventures are automatically saved to player profiles, allowing continuation from any point and the ability to edit, undo, or permanently erase individual actions.
